Child & Teen Therapy In Melbourne

When a child or teen is struggling, the whole family feels it. It might show up as worry, anger, withdrawal or school refusal. I work with kids aged 8 –17 and their parents to understand what’s going on underneath, and find a way forward together.

All therapy at Mindflow Psychology Services is trauma-informed.

How I Work with Children and Teens

I'm interested in more than the behaviour you're seeing. I want to understand what it might be communicating: what your child is feeling, what they need, and how their relationships and experiences are shaping them. The relationship I build with your child is part of the work too.

Every child is different, so therapy is shaped around their age and personality. With younger children, sessions are often more active and creative, using play, drawing and stories. With teenagers, there's more space to talk, reflect and build skills they can use day to day.

I draw on evidence-based approaches, including:

CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) Practical tools for managing worry, big feelings and unhelpful thinking, adapted to your child's age.

Psychodynamic and relational understanding Making sense of what sits underneath the behaviour, including feelings that are hard for a child to put into words.

Parent support Strategies and understanding for you, so the changes made in therapy carry over at home.

(EMDR) Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing Adapted for children and teens, EMDR can help when something upsetting or frightening has happened and is still affecting them. It doesn’t rely on a child being able to talk through what happened in detail.

Where helpful, I work with your GP, paediatrician or your child's school, with your consent.

How Parents Are Involved

Parents are a key part of the work, especially for younger children. Depending on your child's needs, this might include:

•  A first session with parents only, so I can hear your concerns and your child's history

•  Joint parent–child sessions

•  Regular parent check-ins to share strategies you can use at home

For teenagers, I'll talk with you both at the start about confidentiality. Teens need a private space to open up, so I won't share the details of what they tell me. I will always let you know if I'm worried about their safety.

Your First Appointment

The first appointment is usually with parents or carers only. We'll talk about what's been happening, your child's development and family life, and what you hope therapy can help with. From there, we'll plan how to introduce your child to sessions in a way that feels comfortable for them.

If you're separated or co-parenting, I'll ask about parenting arrangements and any court orders at intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need a referral?

No, you can book without one. To claim a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist.

Will my child come to the first appointment?

Usually not. The first session is with parents or carers, so you can speak freely and I can get the full picture before meeting your child.

What if my child doesn't want to come?

That’s really common, especially with teens. We can talk about how to explain therapy in a way that feels less daunting, and the first few sessions focus on getting to know each other.

What will you tell me about my teenagers session?

I’ll keep the details private so your teen feels safe to open up, and share general themes and progress with their permission. If I’m worried about their safety, I’ll always let you know.

How long will therapy take?

It depends on your child and what’s going on. Some families come for a handful of sessions, others for longer. We’ll review how things are going together along the way.

Can sessions be online?

Telehealth can work well for older children and teens. For younger children, in-person sessions in Carlton North usually work better.

Can you talk to my child's school or GP?

Yes, with your consent. Working together with the people around your child can make a real difference.

How soon can I book?

Appointments can be booked online or by contacting Mindflow directly
